8. Previous student videos

Out of all previous student videos the particular video stood out to me. The song was Krept & Konan 'The other side'. The artist have a main target audience of males age 15-25 as they fall under the grime genre. The video is an amplification video as even though the song is about a friend of theirs dying we do not see that happening but what we do see is how they react after the death of their friend which is still related to the music video.
Some thing that really stood out to me was the thought behind the mis en scene. You can see that the location and costume was deeply thought through. There are scenes in a cemeatry and under the suicide bridge which are associated with the song. Also in the scene under the suicide bridge the boy wore a white top which connotes purity and i quite angelic which could be associated with their friend that past away.

There was a range of different shot types and moments when the camera we along with the music.

extension - how premier pro differed from final cut pro

12. Lip sync video editing

This is the final result of my first use of Premier pro. Below there are pictures of the basetracks, jumpcuts and discontinuous editing that I had to do in order to make the video appear as a music video.

I started off with the original audio and had to add it to the time line. I then added the shots that I thought would fit with the music rhythm and lyrics on top of each other and by marking it to the beat and rhythm I cut out shots so that the other shots could be seen. As it was my first time using Premiere I struggled at first as concentration is needed plus you need to make sure you are precise, however I enjoyed it greatly and look forward to using it again.

12. Lip Syncing Video Editing

Today in lesson I uses Adobes Premiere Pro CC 2015 to edit a British rock band video. Below are some screenshots of me editing the clips and the final edit. This was my first time using Adobes Premiere Pro CC 2015. Something different that I noticed about this compared to Final Cut Pro is that you have to place a video clip down before an audio.

12. Lip sync video editing

Lip sync editing

This was my test run on adobe premiere pro so i could get understanding and gain the ability to use premiere so that i could lip sync my final video later on down the line. It was quite difficult but the best way to achieve it was to mark the section of where the music/singing starts. Then later on in the video clip mark the point where the singer sings which then you align together the audio and visual.

11. Mainstream Vs Independent

  Mainstream Vs Independent

The two main groups that have been chosen to show the difference between mainstream and independent are 'One Direction' and 'Lantern on the lake' these are two different groups within the music industry.

Band name: One Direction
Labels: Syco/Columbia

First off we have One Direction it's a boy band based around five singers they were discovered from X-Factor. Each one of the groupees had a singular audition but it was then decided among the judges to put them together and form the band known by the public called One Direction. After being a great success Simon Cowell took them under his record label 'Syco Music'. The target audience for the band is mostly teenagers that are females from the ages of 12-20.

Syco Music is a record label founded by the famous judge Simon Cowell in 2002 also connected to subsidiary company which is called Syco Entertainment. Syco Music has offices in two location London and America this means it has two main music areas established. The record company is entitled and has the rights to sign those that win the X-Factor or Britain's Got Talent. Many other X-Factors winners and auditionees were signed to the company in the genre of POP.

Columbia Records is a American flagship record company under the ownership of Sony Music Entertainment. It was founded in 1887 evolving from a small enterprise until a big reputable record company that has signed many different artistes. It's one of the companies that has last for long amount of time in the music industry.

One direction sell many different merchandises ranging from clothes, fragrances, books, jewelry, stationary this is due to the band's popularity meaning that the merchandise will become very popular and sell consistently as long as one direction maintain their reputation.

Band name: Lantern on the lake
Labels: Bella Union

Lantern on the lake is indie rock band consisting of four different members they then decided to release their own EPs by themselves as they wasn't signed to any record label at that moment. After doing their EPs and single release they were then later signed to Bella Union a record company.

Independent company Bella Union was founded by Simon Raymonde and Robin Guthrie of Cocteau twins in 1997 however it is mainly runned by Simon Raymonde presently. The Cocteau twins first released many records on the label 4AD. Later on then they decided to open their own record company which was called Bella Union. Soon on the company signed a few artist/bands under their label the first band was the Australian trio called 'Dirty Three'.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Throughout the research i had found that mainstream has its pros and cons as well as independent.

Below i will state a few that i had to verdict;

Mainstream:

  • Less creative freedom
  • Less rights and choices over the music
  • More profit/money
  • Getting reputation faster
  • Boost of publicity
  • Strong distribution

Independent

  • Free mind of creativity
  • Has some right and choices over the music
  • Not as strong distribution
  • Less profit/money

9.Individual - costume setting and prop

Powered by emaze

EVALUATION:
I noticed that there is always more than one outfit in each of the music videos. This can be used to show a change of time or location. It also makes the video more visually enticing. In the Jessie J (pop) and Chipmunk (UK rap) videos there are much more costumes than in Amy Winehouse' (Jazz)where  there was only three minor costume changes. This is because Pop and Rap music depend a lot more on image and 'the full package', where as jazz music is usually more focused on just the actual music.
Props where also an important factor to all of the videos. For Rehab, the main props being the instruments highlighted the instruments used in the song and made the video more Jazz styled. The setting and location for price tag differed in Jessie J - Price tag compared to Rehab and Oopsy daisy. This is because in Price Tag the video was all filmed in the same location and the only thing that differed each of the base tracks was the filtered coloured lighting and the props.

8. Hall of Fame favourite

04. Emmanuel, Ariadna, Yuksel, Joshua from 283goswell on Vimeo.

I chose this video made by these students from A2 media last year because their music video was professionally made and had all the conventions of a music video. The overall outcome of the music video was presented perfectly it gives us partial clips that hinted and was connected with the lyrics of the song.

Cinematography

There was many different shots ranging from long shots, establishing shots, close ups and many others. Music video replicated the amount of shots within the first minute of many music videos

Sound

The music within the video is well-synced up with the lip syncing so it makes it look more natural and realistic that they're singing.

Editing

At the start of the music video there is a base track it shows the boy in the graveyard from different degrees and angles. However the boy is still in the graveyard but shown in different points of the clip. They use camera shots between clips as transition and clips were cut to the beat which never cut off the singer before saying a last word after a pause.

Mise-en-scene

I enjoyed how they made the transition within the music by not using pre-made transition and making their own through props or certain scenes. We can tell that mise-en-scene used in the music video was well-presented it had many different costumes that we could notice instantaneous. Lighting was mostly bright as it was shot in bright scenery mostly outside. It simple idea but was executed perfectly since they had made it complex through the usage of editing.

6. Laura Mulvey's Theory

Laura Mulvey's Theory

As soon as the music video starts it quite sexually intense and carry on through the music video you can put Laura Mulvey's Theory in action immediately as you can see the fact that the girl's legs are only shown and not whole body. This tells us facts that Laura's theory is true since she stated that woman dismembered for the male's fantasy/pleasure. We also know the sexual appeal was used for men in this video based on body language of females and costume. Section i was talking about is around 1:14-1:20. If the video doesn't work then please go onto youtube.

3. What is a music video?

What is a music video?

Music video - music video or song video is a short film integrating a song and imagery, produced for promotional or artistic purposes. Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a marketing device intended to promote the sale of music recordings.

Music videos are used to aid with illustration of lyrics within the song it usually tells the story of the song in partial sections than giving the whole story as stated there are three different types of music video disjuncture, illustration and amplify. The visuals are also to promote the star image and reputation of the artist to get them known to a wider audience that way the artist can become easily recognisable. On top of this it brings revenue and income for the record company so this is a must to include the promotional video.

The ideal type in my opinion is amplify i feel as it used in many music videos as it shows fragments scenes that are repeated which give the audience hints and some understanding of the story without giving it away.

As you can see in this video it shows the artist lip syncing it tells us about the story in some certain sections using body language some scenes when the guy is touching the artist sexually but the artist's facial expression seems uncomfortable telling us that she doesn't like him.

Most of the scenes are repeated when the artist was standing and singing in the tiffany coloured room it keeps showing that repeatedly to split up the story scenes so it doesn't add up to a full illustration of the story.

2. Storyboard summer work

Storyboard Summer work

In this scene the artist is shot using a close-up we can see her serious expression through this shot this tells the viewers that she maybe having deep thoughts about something. The scene has dark lighting however it is lit up by using small amount lights from but still luminescent feel to it through the small light sources used in the scene.

This extreme close up of her face with the contrast of the shadow across her face gives the artist a sultry and mysterious sexiness to the scene. It also extenuates the artists face making her look more appealing to the audience’s eyes.

The scene has slow pace singing so as this happens the camera’s movement is quite slow and flows with beat of the song in this section of the music video. This has been cleverly input into the scene as it also blends in with head movement of the artist. The close-up allows the audience to see the artist expression and what she’s trying to pull of in the video.

Long shot establishes the setting of where the artist is but it also shows the artist in full head to toe so from this we can see the costume and the body language. From the body language we can tell she is trying to pull off seductive image by her hands positioning as well as the crossed legs. The costume enhances this effect by showing some flesh and skin.

In this scene it clearly shows her in a car with all females however the artist is wearing very provocative clothing. The girl behind her is hugging in a personal area, which is the breast region from this we can infer as audience as bi-curious or even lesbian sexuality.

This is just a simple establishing shot this just tells the viewers where artist is located and when the scene is shot this set the urban city atmosphere to the whole music video.

The mid-shot of the artist shows the positioning of her hands and lets see her expression as well this give us the idea that she’s frustrated or confused about something. We can also see the scenery that tells us it's based in alleyway with graffiti giving it a overall street feel.

As you can see the same effect is being repeated from scene number 2. However it has used a visual blur effect to keep the face and neck region less noticeable but have advanced focus on the hand positioning on her lips to give appearance of seduction.

Cinematography within this scene is a long shot is displays the female actors inside of the car. All with their hands up high in the air to show that they’re having fun and are exhilarated. The shot tells us the scene is now night life from the background showing us a city landscape at night.

Conclusion

In conclusion the music video and cinematography are dependent on each other because throughout the video I saw a trend in the pattern, which was that, the movement of the camera and the transitions would be based upon the beat/pace of the music at certain time intervals. At each section of the video and song it the beats pace increased tremendously and in contrast so did the transitions to each next scene. On top of this lighting plays a big part as it could change the overall atmosphere and give different affects to the audience by making it seem fun and crazy to seductive/sultry mostly done with lights.
